Lighthouse è il vostro secondo album che segue “Belighted”. Questi due album hanno in comune qualcosa o si differenziano completamente?
Prima di Belighted è uscito un altro album per la Kscope. Tutti e tre gli album sono in qualche modo collegati, sono tutti e tre delle pietre miliari nel nostro percorso musicale. Nel nostro cammino continuiamo a crescere, cambiamo e la musica cambia con noi, ma la nostra essenza rimane sempre invariata. E’ per questo che Lighthouse è per alcuni aspetti molto diverso rispetto agli altri, ad esempio abbiamo inserito nuovi strumenti, abbiamo avuto un approccio differente nella stesura dei testi ma il tema delle battaglie interiori è sempre lo stesso, rimane invariato in molte canzoni anche negli altri due album e non solo in questo.
Di cosa ci parla Lighthouse?
Parla di una storia basata sulla vita di Esther che cerca in tutti i modi una via d’uscita dal posto oscuro in cui è intrappolata. Tutto l’album è dedicato allo studio della malattia mentale e a tutte le sfumature di come una mente malata lavora. Perfino la composizione dell’album è un cerchio, un ciclo, inizia e finisce in un punto, proprio come quello che attraversiamo durante la nostra vita, proprio come la attraversano le persone che hanno una malattia mentale. Questa storia ha anche un finale aperto, così ogni ascoltatore può scegliere il finale che preferisce – oppure semplicemente scegliere un’ altra sequenza e ascoltare di nuovo l’album :)
Le vite di Virginia Woolf e Sylvia Plath hanno ispirato l’album, in cosa maggiormente?
L’approccio al testo è stato per Lighthouse molto diverso rispetto agli altri. Avevo in mente un tema specifico e sapevo esattamente quello che volevo raggiungere, ho lavorato molto sui testi in questa direzione affinchè esprimessero esattamente quello che avevo pensato.
Per me è molto importante sentire fortemente quello che canto, è per questo che devo usare le giuste parole in maniera esatta. Woolf e Plath sono state una grande fonte di ispirazione per come scrivevano e per quello che scrivevano, per tutto quello che hanno passato e di come tragicamente hanno messo fine alle loro vite.
Volevo sentirle fino in fondo, capirle nella loro interezza e far vedere alle persone che la malattia mentale non deve essere trascurata e che deve essere presa sul serio
Nell’album ci sono molti ospiti musicisti…
Gavin Harrison aveva già collaborato con noi alla batteria in Belighted. Stavolta si è aggiunto anche Colin Edwin il suo collega nei Porcupine Tree e abbiamo realizzato una straordinaria sezione ritmica.
Poi Mariusz Duda di Riverside e Lunatic Soul ha registrato la sua splendida voce per il duo nella titletrack Lighthouse
Chi si è occupato dell’artwork della copertina?
La stessa artista che ha creato anche tutte le altre nostre copertine, Constantine Nagishkin, acquarellista di Mosca.
Avete registrato l’album negli storici studi di Mosfilm Studios Moscow…
E’ un posto magnifico, il più grande e il più antico studio di registrazione in Russia, ed anche in Europa, è stato fondato nel 1920. Lo abbiamo scelto perchè ha la migliore attrezzatura per la registrazione con il pianoforte ed ovviamente ha gli strumenti migliori. Il pianoforte ha un ruolo centrale per noi e prestiamo molta attenzione alla registrazione e al mix, ecco perchè è essenziale avere il meglio negli strumenti per la registrazione, e non è un compito facile da trovare in Russia.
Lighthouse è uscito il primo aprile, avete già programmato il tour di presentazione?
Abbiamo in mente qualcosa per mettere su un tour di presentazione. Non è facile per una band come la nostra suonare fuori dalla Russia. Speriamo di riuscire a suonare in Europa in autunno.

“Lighthouse” is your second album that follows the previous one “Belighted”. Do these two albums have in common some analogies? Or some differences?
Technically, there was another album before we signed to Kscope, so Belighted is second and Lighthouse is third. All these three albums are connected in a way, they all are milestones on our musical path. We evolve as we go and we change, and music changes with us, but the core remains untouched. Lighthouse is very different in terms of the tools we used, many new instruments, very different approach to songwriting, but the theme of inner struggles was always very close to me, so there are some songs dedicated to the subject on both previous releases.
“Lighthouse” deals with a story, which one?
It’s a story based around one particular woman, her name is Esther, and she is trying to find her way out of a very dark place she finds herself trapped in. The whole album is dedicated to the study of mental illness and all the nuances of how a broken mind works. Even the composition of the album is a circle, a cycle, it starts and ends at one point, just like the life cycles we all come through – and totally just like people with mental illnesses come through. The story also have an open ending, so that anyone listening could choose their own ending – or maybe simply go for another cycle and listen to the album again :)
Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath’s lives have inspired the album. What they have inspired deeply?
The approach to the lyrics on this album was very different from the previous ones. I had a very specific theme and i knew exactly what i wanted to achieve so i was working on making them as eloquent as possible. For me, it’s important to know that i am passing on the general feeling of what I am singing about in the most accurate manner, so I had to use exactly the right words in a proper way for it. Woolf and Plath were a great inspiration here with how they write and what they write about – and of course what they both came through and how tragically both of them ended their lives. I wanted to feel it, gather throughout understanding of it and make people see that mental illness is not something that can be neglected and not be taken seriously.
The album features guest muicians, can you tell us more about them?
Gavin Harrison also played on our previous album “Belighted”, and this time he recorded drums for us as well. On Lighthouse, however, he is also joined by his Porcupine Tree colleague Colin Edwin, so we have a brilliant rhythm section. Furthermore, Mariusz Duda (Riverside and Lunatic Soul)recorded his beautiful voice for our duo in the title track “Lighthouse”.
And who created the album artwork?
The album artwork is created by all the same artist that made art for all our previous releases – Constantine Nagishkin, watercolor artist based in Moscow, Russia.
You recorded this album in Mosfilm Studios Moscow, it is an important and historical place, isn’it?
It is a glorious place, the biggest and oldest recording studio in Russia – and even in Europe, it was founded in 1920. We chose it because it has all the best equipment for grand piano recording – and the top instruments, of course. Grand piano is the central instrument for us and we pay very close attention to its recording and mixing, that’s why it is essential for us to have the great instrument for the recording, and it’s not an easy task to find one in Russia.
“Lighthouse” is out from the 1 april, do you have planned the following tour?
We do have something in mind and working on putting the tour together at this particular moment – but it’s not an easy task for a band like ours to get out of Russia. Hopefully we’ll play in Europe this autumn.
